Working Holiday Visa Australia: Requirements, Cost, Age Limit (2026)

The first Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) costs $840 AUD and is open to people aged 18–30 (up to 35 for some countries, including the UK, Canada, France, Ireland, Denmark and Italy). It lets you live, work and travel in Australia for 12 months.

Who is eligible for the Working Holiday visa?

You must hold a passport from an eligible country, be 18–30 years old (35 for some countries), apply from outside Australia for your first visa, and have no dependent children with you. Home Affairs also expects you to have enough money to support yourself — around $5,000 AUD plus the fare home is the usual guideline.

What is the difference between the 417 and 462 visas?

They are two versions of the same program for different passports. The 417 (Working Holiday) covers countries like the UK, Ireland, Canada, most of Western Europe, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan; the 462 (Work and Holiday) covers the USA, Spain, and most of Latin America — including Chile, Argentina, Peru, Ecuador and Uruguay. The 462 adds requirements for some countries, such as education levels, English, and annual country caps.

How long can I stay, and can I study?

The visa lasts 12 months from your first entry, with unlimited travel in and out of Australia. You can study for up to 4 months and work to fund your trip — most backpackers work in hospitality, farms, construction and warehousing.

Can I extend it to a second or third year?

Yes. Complete 3 months of specified work (farm work, fishing, mining, construction in regional areas) during your first year and you can apply for a second-year visa; 6 months of specified work in your second year unlocks a third.

What should I sort out in my first week?

Three things: a Tax File Number (free, online), an Australian bank account, and a SIM. With those you can start working immediately — and the Live in Oz community can help you find your first job and room.
