What Is a TFN and How Do I Get One? (2026)

A Tax File Number (TFN) is your personal reference number in Australia's tax system. Applying is free, takes about 20 minutes online, and the ATO issues it within 28 days. You can start working while you wait — but give it to your employer within 28 days of starting, or tax comes out of your pay at the top rate.

How do I apply for a TFN?

If you're in Australia on a visa with work rights, apply online through the ATO's registration for foreign passport holders — you only need your passport and an Australian address. The system checks your visa automatically, and the TFN letter arrives by mail within 28 days. Applying is always free.

Can I work while I wait for my TFN?

Yes. You can start a job immediately and have 28 days to give your employer the TFN. After 28 days without it, they must withhold tax at the highest rate — so apply on day one in Australia.

What is the difference between a TFN and an ABN?

A TFN makes you an employee: your employer withholds tax and pays superannuation on top of your wage. An ABN makes you a contractor responsible for your own tax and super. If a cleaning, delivery or labouring job tells you to "get an ABN" for what is really employee work, that is usually a red flag to dodge your entitlements.

Do I need a new TFN if I change visas?

No — your TFN is yours for life. It stays the same across visa changes, employers, and even if you leave Australia and come back years later.

How do I keep my TFN safe?

Only give it to your employer (after you start), the ATO, your super fund, and your bank. Never put it in a job application, and ignore anyone who calls "from the ATO" demanding your TFN or payment — that is always a scam.
